Whatever your career choice, know that at HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital you can make a difference.GENERAL SUMMARY:The primary responsibility of the Spiritual Counselor is to respond to referrals pertaining to the interfaith spiritual needs of hospice patients, their families and caregivers, and hospice staff. The Spiritual Counselor works as a member of the hospice interdisciplinary team and may participate in weekly interdisciplinary team meetings and visit hospice patients in their home. The Spiritual Counselor may make referrals to area clergy for sacramental or specific faith practices. Interdisciplinary collaboration, ability to deal calmly in stressful situations, excellent listening skills and clear professional boundaries are essential. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Job duties specific to this position:Provides patient visitation, spiritual support, crisis intervention and bereavement support to patients and families of all faith traditions according the plan of care.Offers hope, encouragement, and spiritual presence in the midst of grief, trauma, and unexpected outcomes for patients, families, and staff.Networks and coordinates pastoral care with area clergy to provide interfaith pastoral visitation and sacramental ministry to patients, their families and caregivers.Documents pastoral and sacramental interventions in the medical record.Covers for the regularly scheduled Spiritual Counselor during vacations and other time off.Works collaboratively with the Hospice Interdisciplinary group members, hospital staff and local clergy as needed.Assumes responsibility for own on-going professional development and spiritual well-being.Meets on a scheduled basis with the regularly scheduled Spiritual Counselor and/or the Clinical Team Supervisor Hospice for purposes of communication, collaboration, planning and evaluation.Job duties for all positions:Takes responsibility for ensuring that all work outcomes satisfy the HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital Three Pillars: Finance, Quality, and Service Excellence.The individual must support the mission, vision, and goals of HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital and serve as a role model for the CARES - It Happens Here customer service initiative.Demonstrates excellent attendance and actively participates in a variety of meetings and training sessions as required.Demonstrates a friendly, responsive, service-minded attitude to all internal and external customers.Communicates ideas effectively. Supports and encourages diverse points of view, work and lifestyles.Practices cost containment and fiscal responsibility through the efficient use of supplies, equipment, time, etc.Performs a variety of related duties as assigned.JOB REQUIREMENTSJOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:Knowledge of theories, principles, and concepts across a broad base of religions.Ability to cope effectively with high stress which results from responding to trauma, grief, loss and illness.Ability to lead, guide and motivate staff.Ability to collaborate with others.Must possess exceptional people skills.Strong communication skills, especially the ability to listen.The ability to effectively support a complete, high performing and holistic pastoral care program in hospice program.The ability to read, write and speak clearly in English.EDUCATION:Bachelor s degree in theology, pastoral ministry or a related field required. A minimum of 1-2 units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) desired.EXPERIENCE:Two years of previous experience delivering pastoral care in a clinical environment preferred.Experience in bereavement desired.An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, ETC.:Evidence of current standing or endorsement or faculties for ministry by an appropriate denominational authority or faith group required. Current certification (or eligibility) as a chaplain by the Association of Professional Chaplains or a similar organization such as National Association of Catholic Chaplains is a plus.Valid and unrestricted driver s license recognized by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and access to a reliable, insured vehicle required.WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Refer to the form on the following page.AGE SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES:Possesses and applies the skills and knowledge necessary to provide care to patients and customers throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
